What to Expect if You Haven’t Been to Your Oklahoma City Dentist in Years
Has it been years since you had a dental cleaning? Exam? Any kind of dental work? Whether it’s been a lack of insurance coverage or you just dislike going to the dentist, that first visit back can make a lot of people feel anxious. Especially since they’re not quite sure what to expect. Our trusted dentist in OKC is here to help, no matter what your smile has been through in the past. We’ll take things easy and one step at a time.
Generally speaking, most people visit the dentist if they are due for a checkup or have a problem tooth. Depending on your situation, you can expect one of the following two scenarios:
You’re Due for a Cleaning
Most new patients are due for an exam and cleaning. During your baseline evaluation, we’ll perform a bite assessment, oral cancer screening, periodontal exam, and take a series of diagnostic X-rays.
Depending on how much tartar buildup there is on your teeth, we might be able to clean your teeth that day. If you have active gum disease, we’ll discuss what your options are; a series of deep cleanings might be recommended.
Your first visit back is usually a little longer than most checkups, because we’re gathering a lot of information, taking time to get to know you, and fully evaluating each of your teeth. After that, most six-month checkups are usually completed in under an hour.
There’s a Tooth Bothering You
If you have a toothache, our dentist will help you get out of pain as quickly as possible. First, we’ll evaluate the tooth, then take a small X-ray to assess the area around and inside of it. If needed, we can numb the tooth to get you out of immediate pain, then discuss what options there are.
Depending on the treatment recommendation we may be able to start that day. Otherwise, we’ll reschedule you for treatment as soon as possible. And don’t worry; our treatment coordinators will review all of the financial aspects (including payment plans) so that you know exactly what to expect from a budget standpoint.
Your Comfort Matters
Your teeth and gums might be a little sensitive if you haven’t been to the dentist in a while. We’ll work carefully to ensure you’re comfortable throughout your entire exam. Should you need any treatment, be sure to ask about our sedation options!
